Honda steering problem forces recall of 2 million cars across North America
To date, there have been no reports of any accidents or injuries tied to the issue. (<1 min. read)
Honda is recalling nearly 1.7 million vehicles in the U.S. due to a steering issue, which affects some of its top-selling models.
Zeroing in: The recall affects 2023-25 Acura Integra, Civic Type R, CR-V Hybrid, CR-V, HR-V, 2022-25 Civic, Civic Hatchback, 2024-25 Acura Integra Type S, 2025 CR-V Fuel Cell EV, Civic Hybrid and Civic Hatchback Hybrid.
In addition to the affected models in the U.S., the recall covers another 240,000 Honda and Acura vehicles in Canada and 58,000 in Mexico. That brings the total recall number to more than 2 million vehicles in North America.
What’s the issue? An improperly manufactured steering gearbox wheel can swell when exposed to heat and moisture, which could lead to “sticky steering,” according to Honda, making the vehicles difficult to control and increasing the likelihood of a crash.
Timeline to recall: Honda reportedly received its first complaint about the steering box in 2021. The automaker launched an investigation into the issue after receiving market quality reports in November 2022. The NHTSA began its investigation into the steering boxes in March 2023.
In 2023, the NHTSA received reports of 13 crashes due to the faulty steering boxes. To date, there have been no reports of any accidents or injuries tied to the issue, based on documents filed with NHTSA.
Next steps: Registered owners will be contacted by mail about the recall and given instructions to get the necessary work done free of charge. The recall consists of pulling a plate off the steering gearbox and repacking grease into the drive gear followed by removing and replacing a detent type spring and its seat. One automotive technician at a Honda store estimates the repair takes about 2 hours. Owners who have already paid to have the steering issued fixed might be eligible for reimbursement.
