Doug Karr, Principal SEO at Overfuel, recently joined Daily Dealer Live to break down why dealership page speed has become the single biggest drag on digital visibility, and what dealers can actually do about it.

Here are the five strongest signals from his conversation:

1. Slow sites hide your dealership from shoppers entirely.

Page speed is a visibility problem. A sluggish site depresses ad quality scores, knocks you out of the map pack, and tanks organic rankings before a single customer ever sees your inventory.

As he put it: "You've built this incredible showroom... and then they have a digital showroom that nobody sees because it's slow and sluggish."

2. Auto-pop-up chatbots are quietly killing your site speed.

Chatbots that auto-trigger force the browser to make multiple external server calls, shifting page elements and slowing load times. Karr said turning off the auto-popup alone frequently moves both the conversion rate and speed in the right direction.

"Just by doing that, we see an increase in conversion rate and increase in speed, which increases ranking, which increases visibility,” he said.

3. Know that if you fix your speed today, there’s about a 28-day lag before rankings move.

Google's Chrome User Experience report measures performance over a rolling window. The clock starts when you make the change.

"If you increase your page speed and pass today, you're not really gonna see the results for another 28 days of where you climb in the rankings."

4. GEO and SEO run on the same fuel: consistent data everywhere.

AI platforms cross-reference a dealership's name, address, phone number, reviews, and listings across every directory they can find. Dealers who've kept that data clean are already better positioned in AI search, whether they've thought about GEO or not.

"You have to make sure that your name, address, phone number, your NAP, and citations are everywhere... so that AI can really devour it and give it back."

5. Test your VDP, not your homepage.

The VDP is where shoppers land from search, where they spend the most time, and where a slow load sends them straight back to find a competitor.

"Your VDP is a destination page. Most people are landing on your search result page or your VDP, and that's what you want to be incredibly fast."
