A survey by Insurify reveals that while a whopping 93% of U.S. drivers ages 22 to 28 find driving extremely stressful, two-thirds of the tech-savvy generation aren’t ready for self-driving vehicles.

By the numbers:

  • 26% indicated they don’t like the idea of giving up control of their vehicle to tech.

  • 17% of those surveyed said they’d buy a self-driving car if they had the option.

  • 7% noted they dislike driving and would be happy to own a self-driving vehicle.

Ironically (or maybe not), more than 68% of Gen Zers report some text-related distracted driving behavior. Only 32% of drivers ages 22 to 28 surveyed for the study indicate that they avoid interacting with a text while driving, despite most states banning texting while driving.

Why it matters: Be it ridesharing or personal vehicles, Gen Z is a key demographic for the wider adoption of self-driving cars down the road. Companies like Tesla, Waymo, and traditional automakers have invested hundreds of billions betting that younger consumers would embrace self-driving technology.

Between the lines: According to Insurify’s findings, Gen Zers have also grown more hesitant about EVs, though the reasoning behind that apprehension is different.

  • Nearly half of the Gen Zers—who currently own or lease a vehicle—say the elimination of the EV tax credit will affect whether they buy an EV.

  • Gen Z is the second-biggest adopter of EVs behind millennials, according to Insurify’s database of more than 97 million insurance quotes.

Of course, drivers ages 22 to 28 aren’t the only ones who might pass on an EV with the removal of the federal tax credit. Nearly one in four likely EV buyers indicated they would reconsider purchasing an EV without the incentive, according to a Harris Poll released in June.

Bottom line: For an industry that assumed digital natives would eagerly adopt any new technology, Gen Z is delivering a harsh reality check about the difference between wanting innovation and actually paying for it.
